A process is claimed for the fabrication of metal from ores containing oxides by the addition of an appropriate reducing agent. In a shaft furnace a pipe is provided along which is fed the ore to come into contact with hot gases arising from the shaft furnace. The ore is melted and flows into the shaft furnace forming several layers inthe bath. The lower layer consisting of newly formed liquid ion and FeO, the middle layer being liquid are and FeO/Fe and the upper layer comprising slag and FeO/fe.
