Prepn. of inks or printing colours comprises:- (a) spectrophotometrically analysing by transmission the dye content of all the inks that are to be used; (b) storing in a computer the data resulting from the analysis, as well as the optical parameters of the dyes present in the inks; (c) selecting a shade to be reproduced, by spectrophotometrically analysing by reflection a print to be reproduced or by selecting one of the formulae stored in (b); (c) using the computer to calculate the amts. of thickener of the ink(s) to be reused and/or the base inks, as a function of the desired amt. of ink, of the required shade and of the stored data; (e) mixing the inks components thus calculated, by means of metering pumps which are automatically controlled by the computer; and (f) feeding the obtd. ink into the ink block of the printing machine. At least 3 and pref. all 6 operations (a) to (f) are controlled and effected automatically .
