Damage to a motor vehicle is assessed by means of a set of views A-E of the upper, end and side surfaces of it, divided into sections by a grid. The user sketches in the damage, counts the squares affected in each view and applies a formula to obtain the cost of repair. To avoid double counting, parts of each view are left ungridded, and to weigh the result for damage to areas where repair is difficult parts 1, 22 of appropriate views are shaded or stippled to indicate that if a shaded square is affected it is to be counted at a higher than normal rate.
