A surface mountable capacitor (12) is covered on all sides by layers of electrically and thermally insulative material (18, 76, 78, 80), two access passages (32) for providing electrical access to electrical contacts (14, 16); one at each side of the capacitor, are formed through the layer (18) of thermally insulative material, The access passages are shaped to limit thermal communication to the electrical contacts (14, 16) and contact pads (54, 56) are connected to the electrical contacts (14, 16) through the passages (32) to enable the capacitor to be connected into an electrical circuit. The contact pads (54, 56) fill and extend a distance beyond the limits of each of the access passages (32) to increase the electrical contact area accessible from outside the insulative layer (18).
