The invention relates to a method of improving the wet strength of paper products produced from bleached or unbleached kraft pulp, thermomechanical pulp, SCMP or sulfite pulp. The method comprises the steps of subjecting paper to high pressure densification during its production and heating the paper so as to raise its internal temperature to at least 216 DEG C for a period of time sufficient to increase the wet strength thereof.
