TWO-STAGE PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF SHALE OIL CONTAINING SHALE SOLIDS AND METALS

ABSTRACTIn the treatment of shale oil contaminated withparticulate shale solids and metals, such as iron andarsenic, a close-coupled two-stage hydroprocessing of theoil is performed by (a) contacting said contaminated shaleoil with hydrogen in a hydrothermal treating zone to forma product which still contains shale solids and metals,and (b) catalytically hydroprocessing the product bypassing the product through the hydroprocessing zone withhydrogen gas in upflow relationship to the catalyst of thehydroprocessing zone.
