The compounds of the formula I IMAGE in which the substituents R1, R2, R3, R4 and X are defined in Claim 1, are prepared by reaction of an appropriately substituted indole derivative with an isocyanate or isothiocyanate containing the substituent R4. The compounds of the formula I can be converted into their corresponding acid addition salts or quaternary ammonium salts. If R4 denotes acyl, the possibility also exists of hydrolysing compounds of the formula I to the corresponding amino compound. The said compounds have a hypotensive and antihypertensive activity and can be used as medicaments for the treatment of hypertension or alternatively as intermediates for the preparation of compounds having hypotensive activity.
