Catheter for synchronised retrograde coronary perfusion - of venous capillaries with oxygen-rich blood has expandable balloon at tip contg. second balloon away from tip with continuous blood supply
The catheter is partic. intended for synchronised retrograde coronary perfusion (SRP) of the cardiac muscle, i.e. introduction of oxygen-rich blood near the coronary sinus to enter the venous capillaries to counteract ischaemia due to partial arterial obstruction upstream. It comprises an expandable balloon at the tin of the catheter which, during diastole, blocks the sinus so that the fresh blood can be admitted and, during systole, is compressed to permit passage of arterial blood. This balloon contains at least one second balloon further from the tip which second balloon connects with the fresh blood supply via a catheter duct, the outer balloon being activated via a separate catheter duct. The arrangement is such that, during diastole, the activated outer balloon blocks the sinus and compresses the inner balloon to expel the fresh blood received therein during systole.
