The installation for automatic metal-arc welding metal workpieces (5) under power (via nozzle 18) comprises a current source (1-3), an electrode wire (10) feed (8) unit (7) with an electrode nozzle (9) connected to the source, and a carriage (6) moved (11) along the workpiece. The current source is controlled (4) such that it supplies a high (1+2,3) alternating with a low (1) welding current whilst the electrode feed rate varies synchronously with the welding current, the respective rates being adjustable (15). The carriage movement rate is pref. controlled (4) such that this rate varies synchronously with the welding current, the respective rates being adjustable (16). The magnitudes of the respective welding currents and their durations are pref. adjustable (14).
