An air-cooled surface condenser having at least two rows of cooling tubes arranged sequentially in the flow direction of the cooling air is known. The heat-exchanging surfaces of the cooling tubes are matched to the temperature gradients available in any one case between the steam inlet temperature and cooling air temperature, for example by means of different rib clearances in the rows of tubes, in such a way that the condensation in all the rows of tubes is terminated approximately uniformly at a small spacing from the tube ends opening into the condensate collecting chamber. A disadvantage of this arrangement is that the condensing power of the row of tubes that is firstly encountered by the cooling air has been artificially reduced. According to the invention, in a surface condenser (1) having two or more rows at least the lengths (8, 10) of the cooling tubes (3, 4) that are firstly and lastly encountered by the cooling air KL and which are connected to the steam distributor chamber are arranged mutually offset with regard to their lengths (9, 11) respectively connected to the condensate collecting chamber with exchange of the sequence of cooling air application at least in the flow direction of the cooling air KL in the approximately central region (7) of the length of the cooling tubes 3, 4. In this way, the total output of each cooling tube (3, 4) corresponds to the average value of the two component outputs in the lengths (8, 9) and (10, 11). IMAGE
