Process for preparing solutions of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium alkoxides in solvents of the hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon type

A process for preparing new compositions of stable liquid hydrocarbon-soluble alkaline earth metal alkoxides and complexes of the same with for example lithium alkyls, magnesium dialkyls, aluminium trialkyls and the like, which are useful as or in the preparation of polymerisation catalysts and initiators for the polymerisation of alpha-olefins and diolefins, which are prepared for example by reacting certain organomagnesium compounds or organic compounds of other alkaline earth metals in liquid hydrocarbon solvents with (a) monovalent C4-C12 aliphatic primary alcohols which are alkyl substituted in the 2 position, or (b) mixtures of (a) with aliphatic C3-C12 secondary alcohols, is described. Alternatively, these alcohols can be substituted by 2- alkoxy alkanols. Illustrative examples of the new alkaline earth metal alkoxides are magnesium and barium 2- methyl-1-pentyloxide. An illustrative organometallic complex of these alkaline earth metal alkoxides is that produced by mixing n-butyl lithium in solution in heptane with magnesium 2-methyl pentyl oxide in solution in heptane.
