Refining chromium steel by argon blowing

Cr-contg. molten steel is refined by: decarburising; adding Al reducer and CaO slag former to the slag; and reducing and desulphurising. Amts. of Al and CaO added yield a final slag SiO2 content of not more than 10% and a CaO/Al2O3 ratio of 0.8-2.0 pref. 1.4-2.0, thus enabling reduction and desulphurisation to proceed simultaneously.
