ABSTRACTMethod and apparatus for determining when the castof a blast furnace is substantially completed in a blastfurnace cast system wherein direct viewing of the tap-hole is obstructed during the cast. In a system whereinviewing of the taphole is obstructed by hood meanscovering the iron trough, substantial completion of thecast may be determined by sensing changes in ambientconditions, e.g., a change in temperature within thehood means, vibration of the hood, and/or a change inthe color of the flame generated at the discharge end ofa slag runner.
