ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThe use of glycols as coreactive additives withglyoxal in the aluminum sulfate-catalyzed crosslinkingcotton cellulose in the presence of alpha-hydroxyacids as catalyst activators at moderate curing tempera-tures is disclosed. The cotton textiles so treated arefree from the discoloration and excessive tenderingproduced by glyoxal in the presence of metal salt catalystsat high temperature, are non-nitrogenous and formaldehyde-free, and exhibit high levels of wrinkle resistance andsmooth drying properties without the formaldehyde releasecharacteristic of N-methylolamide finishing agents.
