A fully portable heart-lung substitution system and method comprising a venous cannula (78) adapted for insertion through the vena caval system (82) of the patient and arterial cannula (106), (96) adapted for insertion into the right and left common carotid arteries (110), (100). The entire system is mounted on a portable carrying case (12), (14) for use outside the environment of a hospital facility.
