The present invention relates generally to the de novo synthesis of polymers containing polypeptides as an integral part of their structure from conjugation of polymerizable compounds covalently bonded to a polypeptide, to the use of these conjugates in effecting selective removal of substances from a solution thereof by polymerization of the conjugates and to immunoassays in which a polymerization reaction is used to effect a separation of the specific reactants.
