The pressure generating plant of the system is not operational during testing. A large accumulator (3) has an adjustable high pressure pump with a feed line to the high pressure side of the system. A return line leads from the low pressure side of the system to the accumulator, which has a level monitor (8). A throttle valve in the return line is adjusted by the size of the valve body. - The valve is additionally adjusted in dependence on the flow in the feed line. The level monitor is accommodated in a vertically displaceable auxiliary vessel (26), which communicates with the accumulator. The auxiliary vessel is adjusted via a thermostatic cell (31), in dependence on the temp. of the liq. in the accumulator.
