Section of a string of drill pipes has a spiral of a protective narrow tube arranged along the wall of its bore. A conducting cable inside it is connected through oblique holes to a groove along the flange on both ends. A conductive ring, linked to the cable, is embedded in an insulating seal of e.g. epoxy resin, leaving only the conductor surface bare. An electrical path is provided for any signals which have to be transmitted from a well to the surface. It can be used in deflected holes without risk of any rope or tool, passed along the bore, fouling the connecting tube. The drill pipe section has a male end and a female end. A connecting cable is inserted through a protective tube which is kept in a spiral closely pressed against the inner wall. An insulated conductor is led through channels at one end and channels at the other end to a conductor ring. These rings are embedded by epoxy resin in a groove along the face joint and form a good electrical contact when a male thread is connected to a female thread.
