The automatic programme selection system, for a television or radio receiver, reads directly from programme timetables in periodicals published by broadcasting authorities. Wanted programmes are stored to enable the receiver to switch on automatically at the time the wanted programme is due to start. The programmes listed in the periodical are coded using an optical bar code which is read by a detector pen coupled by cable to the receiver. The data read is entered in a store. A clock and comparator control switch-on.
