The chemical decontamination of heat exchangers (1) having vertical U-tubes (2f) made of metallic materials by means of an aqueous solution is carried out in such a way that the heat exchanger (1) is first freed from nitrogen and oxygen by venting, and then is filled with a water-soluble gas. The decontamination solution is then charged, with the water-soluble gas being withdrawn. The decontamination solution is continuously degassed in the further processing in which the dissolved activity is removed via an ion exchanger (17). IMAGE
