Plastics screw extruder having a screw barrel and screw which is drivable so as to rotate therein. The screw barrel is provided with a cooling device contiguous with the feed opening. The cooling device has cooling channels for guiding a cooling medium. The screw barrel is designed in one piece over its entire length. In the region of the cooling device, the screw barrel has an outer jacket having an outer diameter which is reduced with respect to its remaining extent. Helically surrounding cooling channels are cut into the outer jacket. On this outer jacket there is disposed a sleeve which closes off the cooling channels, has inlet and outlet bores for coolant and is welded to the screw barrel. IMAGE
