An ultrasonic test device for non-destructive testing of the running tread of rail vehicle wheels by means of ultrasonic surface waves, in which an ultrasonic transducer is arranged in a recess which is constructed eccentrically in the rail head of a rail and is open towards the surface of the rail head, is configured according to the invention such that during the test process the transducer bears in a defined way against the running treads to be tested. This is achieved when the transducer is mounted in a resiliently movable fashion on the rail by means of elastic elements in the recess.
