The invention relates to a method for optically transmitting bit-serial message information, particularly of voice and video signals, via local area networks equipped with coupling devices and configured in the form of a ring, to which a number of stations processing different types of communication and adapted to the network structure of these local area networks can be connected in arbitrary combination with one another, each station exhibiting transmitting and receiving devices for transmitting the message information and the order of access of the individual stations to the local area network being controllable by a synchronisation clock and the transmitting and receiving device of the stations being connectable to a passive star coupler, constructed as transmissive mixer, in such a manner that the length of the transmitting line is equal to the length of the receiving line of the respective station. Within the network configured in the form of a ring, the synchronisation clock is generated by a source address information formed by each station 1 to N, which, in the case of a failure of one or a number of stations 1 to N is in each case transmitted updated by means of a source address correction device.
