The surfaces of the two sliding partners, whose base material is preferably an austenitic steel or a stellite, are highly polished at least in the region of their mutual contact, and in particular to such an extent that their maximum peak-to-valley height Rt according to DIN 4702 is within the limits from 0.5 to 3 mu m. At least one of the two surfaces is provided with a coating of titanium nitride and/or titanium carbide, deposited chemically from the vapour phase and having a thickness of 5 to 30 mu m, in most cases 10 to 15 mu m. This non-lubricated sliding system is highly corrosion- and temperature-resistant, gives trouble-free operation even at temperatures above 400 DEG C and is particularly suitable for shut-off devices for liquids and/or gases, even those having corrosive properties.
