In a process for sheathing a metal pipe with a thermoplastic, in particular polyethylene, a polyamide or a copolyamide of polyamide 6, polyamide 66, polyamide 610, polyamide 11 or polyamide 12 with a melting point between 110 DEG C and 180 DEG C is applied onto the heated steel pipe. This polyamide layer is coated with an acrylic ethylene copolymer; subsequently the thermoplastic is applied. The thermoplastic polyamide layer can be readily detached by simple heating, such as is necessary for example on a construction site for carrying out welding work. Nevertheless an extremely high peel strength results.
