The proposal is for a process for the production of castings from cast iron using spheroidal or vermicular graphite in a casting mould. In this process, a treatment chamber is either placed on a mould or formed in the latter. A preliminary alloy based on magnesium and/or rare earths is introduced into a recess in the treatment chamber. When the molten metal is poured into the treatment chamber, it reacts with the preliminary alloy. Arranged above the recess is a separating element which, on the one hand, serves as a flow resistance and, on the other hand, ensures thorough reaction of the molten metal with the preliminary alloy. During the pour-in process, the ingate in the treatment chamber is closed by means of a plug and the molten metal, which is metered in, is briefly built up before the plug is removed to allow the mould cavity to be filled. In addition to the economic advantages offered by this method, the reproducible quality of the castings produced is of particular significance, as is the improved pouring and mould filling. IMAGE
