The thread tensioner for sewing machines is equipped with two opposite thread tensioning disks or two thread tensioning disks and one or several intermediate disks located between the two. The disks move axially and can be pressed against each other by a press device. At least one of the tensioning disks or an intermediate disk which act together for the deceleration of the thread, incorporates a free space for the thread running into the tensioning device. In this space, the thread is not decelerated by the disks. ADVANTAGE - The device ensures a constant and even needle thread tension irrespective of the type and strength of the thread.
