Organic coating is removed from surface of a coated article by contacting the surface with a stripping compsn. (I) in gas state, thus destroying the adhesion of coating to the surface, and doing so without the temp. of the surface or the stripper substantially going above ambient temp. Stripper can be used esp. for removing organic resin based compsns. such as paint lacquer, varnish etc. as well as oils and asphalts from articles having large, uneven surfaces such as the interior walls of storage silos and reservoirs ballast tanks, and ships holds, and tanks petrol or oil tanks. Process is cheaper, more efficient, safer, less harmful to the environment and uses less energy than current processes and any additives such as waxes to prevent evapn. do not remain on the cleaned surface to interfere with subsequent fresh coatings. (I) can be recovered for further use.
