A fermentation process, anaerobic or aerobic, in which a biomass is fixed on a packing material inside the fermentation vessel. A relative movement of low amplitude is induced between the packing material and the substrate of fermenting material. Pref. the pacing is contained in a perforated basket which is periodically given a vertical reciprocatory or rotary oscillatory movement. The process is for the disposal of organic waste with the benefit of biogas prodn. The periodic, relative movement displaces stagnant liq. and microbubbles of gas which blind the packing surfaces and interfere with contact between the biomass and fresh substrate.
