The invention consists in selecting phenol derivatives which are capable of allowing the enzymatic assay of urea in two stages instead of three. These derivatives should be stable in the presence of the urease and should provide a satisfactory colorimetric reading. The use of thymol, meta-cresol, 2-phenylphenol, 2,3-dichlorophenol or tricresol, among others, is thus proposed. Application to the assay of urea in blood serum.
