The invention relates to an apparatus intended for separating in two a product composed of two layers 13, 14 holding tightly between both of them an array of wires 11 called "pile" wires in order to obtain two plush layers and to do this while imparting the best possible appearance, on articles which do not allow for storage in double-layer form. This apparatus uses a discontinuous or endless steel band 7 with dissymmetrical reciprocating or continuous movement depending on the product to be separated into two layers. It is designed to be able to release the band 7 from the cutting zone, in synchronism with the reciprocation of the movement and any preponderant movement of the production machine, if necessary. It is adapted to the mechanical requirements imposed by machines for manufacturing double-layer products, especially looms for weaving velvets (pile fabrics) at 450 double picks per minute. IMAGE
