PURPOSE:To improve volumetric efficiency, reduce a pumping loss, and improve combustion efficiency by installing an intake valve and an exhaust valve in the direction of the longer diameter of a cylinder whose sectional form has a non circular shape, and providing the end part of a fuel injection valve on the center part of said cylinder. CONSTITUTION:Plural cylinders 12 are placed in the direction of the center line 11 of a crankshaft leaving a space. The cylinder 12 is formed in a non-circular shape having a shorter diameter in the direction of the center line 11 while a longer diameter in the direction perpendicular to the center line 11. In such a structure, the intake and exhaust openings 16, 17 of intake and exhaust ports 14, 15 are placed on both end sides in the longer diameter direction of the cylinder 12 respectively. And, intake and exhaust valves 20, 21 are installed in such a way that they can be seated on the intake and exhaust openings 16, 17 respectively. On the other hand, the end part of a fuel injection valve 43 is provided on the top-end center part of the cylinder 12. Thereby, the diameters of the intake and exhaust valves 20, 21 can be made larger while the distance between the intake and exhaust ports 14, 15 can be made larger, thereby, attaining a desired end.
