PURPOSE:To enable digital display for the rate of defective area to the sample area or defective area only, by the operational processing through the use of surface echo, defective echo and probe scanning drive pulse. CONSTITUTION:The probe 3 receives the echo from the sample 2 based on the ultrasonic wave signal radiated from itself. The reception echo is processed for AND logic with the gate pulses PS, PF at the gate circuits 20, 21 to individually detect the surface echo S and defective echo F, and the output of the comarator circuit 22 based on the surface echo S, the output of the counter circuit 11, output of the comparator circuit 23 based on the defective echo F and output of the counter circuit 12 are processed for logic at the AND gates 24, 25. The number of counts of the counter circuits 26, 27 respectively represents the sample area and defective area, the number of both counts is inputted to the operation circuit 28 to obtain the defective area to the sample area and it is displayed at the digital display circuit 29.
