The sleeve is intended for protecting a plant stem or a tree branch or root portion, particularly after grafting for the purpose of propagation. It consists of a length of material, such as PVC, which is formed into an open-ended sleeve of which the wall surrounds the stem with 1-10mm radial clearance to provide an insulating air layer. - The wall is provided with preferential break grooves or flats at either side so that it breaks open when the stem girth increases. Alternatively, the material is formed into a sleeve by one or more windings with at least one overlap so that it automatically adjusts to increasing stem girth, the air space in that case being provided by projections on the material acting as spacers.
