The invention relates to a process for decreasing the energy consumption in the process for production of pelleted mixed feeds. The aim of the invention is to use the waste energy arising during pressing of mixed feeds for preconditioning the feed mixture and to achieve a high pellet quality. For this purpose the object to be achieved is a direct return of moisture and heat from the exhaust air of the pellet cooler to the cold feed mixture, and specific cooling and drying of the pellets. According to the invention the object is achieved in that the pellets are cooled in a pellet cooler in such a way that a maximum heating and moistening of the cooling air occurs. This cooling air is metered as heat exchange medium into a heat exchanger and flows through the feed mixture. The feed mixture heated and moistened in this process passes into a conditioner, is brought to the optimum temperature and moisture content for the pressing operation and then fed to the feed press. After the further temperature increase, produced by the pressing operation, of the feed mix and thus the pellets, these must be brought, in the downstream pellet cooler, to the temperature and moisture content necessary for storability, the process proceeding further as described above.
