Aq. self-preserving cleaning and conservation solns. for soft contact lenses contain as sole active ingredient a water-soluble amphoteric surfactant of formula R-A-R1-N(R2)(R3)+-R4-COO-(I), or its ophthalmologically-acceptable salt. In the formula R = 6-18C-alkyl, -alkenyl, or -alkadienyl (opt. substd. with Hal, OH, or amino); A = -O-, -S-, -C(O)O-, or C(O)NR'- (with R' = H or lower alkyl); R1 = 2-6C alkylene (opt. OH-substd.); R2, R3 = H or lower alkyl (opt. substd. with carboxy or with 1 or 2 OH, one of which can be esterified with phosphoric or sulphuric acid); R4 = (opt. OH-substd.) up to 3C alkylene. Soft contact lenses are cleaned or preserved by bringing into intense contact with the soln.. The soln. is mfd. by conventional mixing of the components. Pref., R = 11-17C alkyl or alkenyl; A = -O- or (esp.) -CONH-(CO bound to R); R1 = (esp. unsubstd.) 2 or 3C alkylene; R2, R3 = lower alkyl (opt. substd. with carboxy or, esp., one OH, which can be esterified to form the corresp. triorganophosphate); R4 = up to 3C alkylene. Alternatively, R = 8-12C alkyl; A = -CONH- (CO bound to R); R1 = 2 or 3C alkylene; R2, R3 = lower alkyl; R4 = up to 3C alkylene. Specific (I) are N-lauroylaminopropyl- or N-cocoylaminopropyl-N,N-dimethylglycine, and tris-(3-(N-cocoylaminoethyl) -N-hydroxyethyl-N-carboxymethyl)amino -2-hydroxypropanol) phosphate. The soln. also contains a soluble salt which is compatible with eye tissue, such that the salt content corresp. to a tonicity of 0.5-2 wt.% NaCl. Pref. soln. contains 0.005-2 wt.% (I), 0-5 wt.% non-ionic surfactant, 0-5 wt.% thickening agent, 0-1 wt.% chelating agent; 0-2 wt.% buffer, and 0-2 wt.% additional salt.
