The invention relates to a mixed bacterial culture which is prepared by initially inoculating a lacteous base material suitable as a breeding substrate with a culture of a generally available strain of Streptococcus thermophilus, followed by being incubated at suitable temperature, whereupon the lacteous base material is inoculated with an amount of a culture of a generally available strain of Lactobacillus bulgaricus. The invention further relates to a a method for preparing a mixed culture of this type and to a substance containing such mixed culture and being particularly suited for making yogurt having a high proportion of dextrorotatory lactic acid thanks to the method of its preparation as outlined with reference to the mixed bacterial culture. The invention moreover relates to a method for making yogurt with the employ of the above mentioned mixed bacterial culture.
