A small drop of adhesive (2) is placed on the face of a laser diode (3), LED, integrated circuit, photo-transistor, etc., and the end of the optical fibre is positioned inside the drop. A beam (5) of ultra-violet light is focussed (4) onto the other end of the fibre. The U.V. radiation has a wavelength between 150 and 1500 nanometres. Suitable sources of U.V. radiation are an argon ion laser with a wavelength of about 363.8 nanometres or a nitrogen laser with a wavelength of about 337.1 nanometres.
