The method is intended for packing a product, such as a roll of metal wire mesh material, by wrapping in plastic foil such that the foil fits around the object under tension. Wrapping is carried out (helically), using foil in strip form which is kept under tension during the operation and has at least its start and its end secured, e.g. by adhesive tape. The tension is preferably such that it produces an elongation of at least 40%, but rather 80-200% in the foil. The wrapping operation may be programmed such that at the start and end, more foil layers wholly or partly overlap than during the remainder of the operation.
