The mechanism for vertically lifting or lowering a pile or tube comprises two members (1a,b; 2a,b) which engage around the pile and are coupled with a lifting cable. Lift tension of the cable presses the members against its perimeter to clamp it through friction. The two members are coupled via pains of links (5,6; 7,8), the links of each pair having their outer ends connected with the members via horizontal pivots (12,14; 13,15). Their facing ends are connected via further horizontal pivots (9,10) which are engaged by the lift cable eyes (16). Each member may consist of at least two halves which are connected via vertical pivots (3,4).
