A known quantity of the medium contg. the micro organisms or cells is brought into contact with a carrier with bio-specific binding structure. When the binding of the organism or cells has occurred, the remainder are washed off. The bound micro organisms and cells are then supplied with nutrient so that their metabolism begins and chemical or physical changes can be detected. The carrier comprises magnetic particles e.g. 3-10 microns esp. 1 microns magnetic microspheres which can be held in a magnetic hold during the washing stage.
