From a sterile packing condition, in which the stocking has the form of a short tube, the garment is threaded on to the foot and over the leg of a patient without the sterility being jeopardised. The shaft of the stocking, in the packing state, has a folded part (6) and an adjoining smooth part (7), the latter being located nearer to the stocking foot than the folded part. The smooth part (7) is folded at the outset over the folded part. The garment when brought on to the foot of a patient can, after the smooth part (7) has been folded backwards, be pushed up over the leg in one action.
