Prodn. of pleuromutilin derivs. of formula (I) comprises reacting, in presence of phase-transfer catalysts, a sulphonate ester (II) with a mercapto-amine (III), then opt. converting to a salt with an organic or inorganic acid. (n = 2-5; R1 is ethyl or vinyl; R2 and R3 are 1-4C alkyl, or together complete a heterocycle opt. contg. an additional O, S or NR5; R5 is 1-4C alkyl; R6 is 1-4C alkyl or phenyl opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl).
