The preparation is described of an improved powdered tobacco, usually known as snuff, which contains substantially pure nicotine salts diluted with organic sugars, which is substantially absorbed by the nasal membranes when it is applied to them. Optionally present are aromatizing and/or colouring agents. The improved powdered tobacco is prepared by adding an acid to a nicotine solution, separating the nicotine salt from the solution, diluting the nicotine salt to a usable concentration and optionally adding aromatizing and/or colouring agents in order to improve the fragrance and appearance of the improved powdered tobacco.
