The preparation of macro-cross-linked polymers which are useful for removing Lewis acid and oxidising agent impurities from inert fluids is described. The cross- linked polymers according to this invention comprise a plurality of functional groups which have been subjected to metallisation or mixtures of functional groups which have been subjected to metallisation, in which the functional groups correspond to the general formula: IMAGE in which Ar is an aromatic hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 3 rings, R is selected from the group comprising alkyl hydrocarbon radicals, benzophenone radicals, benzophenone salts, fluorenone radicals and fluorenone salts, and M is selected from the group comprising lithium, potassium, sodium, alkyl magnesium and alkyl zinc; the impurities are easily removed from such inert fluids by placing the fluids in contact with the cross-linked polymer and then separating the fluids from the purifying agent.
