- 29 -A B S T R A C TPROCESS FOR THE COMBUSTION OF COKE PRESENT ON SOLIDPARTICLES AND FOR THE PRODUCTION OF RECOVERABLEHEAT FROM HYDROCARBON-BEARING SOLIDPARTICLES AND APPARATUS THEREFORProcess and apparatus for the combustion of coke present onsolid particles from which hydrocarbons have been substantiallyremoved by heating, and for the production of recoverable heatfrom hydrocarbon-bearing solid particles, in a series of at leasttwo combustion stages. The process comprises the following steps:a) feeding the solid particles into the first combustion stageof the series through an inlet near its bottom;b) introducing an oxygen-containing gas into the bottom of eachcombustion stage, whereby at least part of the particles areentrained towards an upper outlet and at least part of the coke onthe particles is combusted, yielding a flue gas;c) passing the particles and the flue gas from the upper outletof each combustion stage into a separation stage, following eachoombustion stage;d) separating the flue gas from the particles in each separationstage, discharging the flue gas at the top of the said stage andwithdrawing the particles at the bottom thereof;e) introducing at least a part of the withdrawn particles intothe next combustion stage subsequent to the separation stagethrough an inlet near its bottom, thereby starting a new sequenceessentially the same as in a) through d), at least a part of theparticles withdrawn from the last separation stage being dis-charged.
