-10-AbstractMultidiameter Cavity for Reduced ModeCompetition in Gyrotron OscillatorIn a gyro-monotron oscillator a single, "monotron"cavity is used to interact with the electron beam. Tohandle very high powers without excessive cavity loss,the cavity is excited in a higher order mode such asTE0ml. Other modes can be resonant in the cavity,interfering with the operation when their frequency isnear the operating frequency.To increase the mode separation, an upstreamsection of the cavity is made smaller, to support onlya lower-order mode such as TE011. Also, the beam ispre-bunched by this lower order, interference-freemode so has less tendency to interact with spuriousmodes in the higher order cavity.
