ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method for carrying out processes capable of catalysisby protons using as catalyst a stabilized pillared interlayeredclay. Such processes are(i) a process for the production of an ether byreacting either an olefin or an olefin oxide with an alcohol, or(ii) a process for the production of an ether byreacting either a primary or secondary aliphatic alcohol, apolyol or an olefin oxide, or(iii) a process for the production of an alkyl aromaticcompound by reacting an aromatic compound with either an alcoholor an olefin, or(iv) a process for the production of an alcohol byreacting an olefin with water, or(v) a process for the production of an ester by react-ing either an olefin or an olefin oxide with a carboxylic acid.
