ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThis invention relates to equipment and methodsfor detecting the presence of, measuring the amount of,and/or monitoring the level of, one or more selectedcomponents in a liquid mixture, employing an electrodesensing system. We have discovered that a class ofmediating compounds has extremely useful properties formediating the transfer of charge between enzyme-catalysedreactions and electrode surfaces in electrode sensingsystems. Specifically, the specification discloses aselectrode sensor mediators, organometallic compoundscomposed of at least two organic rings, each of which has atleast two double bonds in a conjugated relationship; a metalatom is in electron-sharing contact with those rings. Anenzyme capable of catalyzing a reaction at a raterepresentative of the selected compound concentration is incontact with an assay mixture, and the mediator compoundtransfers charge between the enzyme and the conductivesurface of the electrode at a rate representative of theenzyme catalyzed reaction rate.
