ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURENovel chlorosulfonated polyarylethersulfonesderived by controlled treatment with chlorosulfonic acidof difficultly sulfonatable polyarylethersulfone ofrecurring units of the formula:wherein Ar1 and Ar2 represent phenylene or phenylene sub-stituted with non-deactivating groups where Ar1 and Ar2may be the same or different are described with the methodof their preparation, The partially sulfonated-sulfochlorinated polyarylethersulfones may be subsequentlyconverted to cation-exchange materials or ion-exchangematerials with mixed cation and anion exchange sites.
